Marimekko world

November 5, 2012 in Beauty & Fashion, Bed Room, Home Decor, Lifestyle

If you haven’t heard about Marimekko, you have definitely seen one of their famous prints like for example Unikko print or simply-striped red and white Jokapoika shirt.

Marimekko is Finnish textiles and fashion company based in Helsinki. It was founded in 1951 by Viljo and Armi Ratia. They are particularly noted for brightly-coloured printed fabrics and simple styles, used both in women’s garments and in home furnishings. They have made a great contribution in fashion in 60’s and 70’s. Even Jackie Kennedy has worn a few of their famous dresses and posed in a red sleeveless dress for the cover of Sports Illustrated.

What I love about Marimekko is uniqueness, simplicity and the quality of design which has a classical and nostalgic fell to it. On the web site they have stated: “It’s relatively rare to be born a classic – usually it’s something you grow into, sparking comments, turning heads, gaining popularity. But there are those serendipitous, surprising instances when a product is a classic the moment it sees the light of day. What that really says is that classics are born of a unique convergence of people, culture, attitudes, and appreciation.”

Inspiration: Colourful dining chairs

I found many beautiful designs, but when I saw a photo of simple dining room with colourful chairs I said to myself: “This is just a perfect and easiest way to spice up the room.”  You don’t need to paint the walls in crazy colours or exaggerate with decoration. The only thing you have to do is to change your boring chairs with new colourful dining chairs. I like the idea of having different colours of chairs. You can also upholster your old chairs with fun patterned fabric.

Here are a few amazing examples:

Chevron patterns are my latest obsession. It’s essentially a series of V’s laid out in a row. Many people call it a Zig Zag pattern. All thought it is quite bold pattern it still makes a really strong impact in any room. There are many ways to use this. It can be used on rugs, furniture, floors, textiles, – and even on walls! You can also play with different colors from muted or neutral colors to fun and vibrant colors. Here are some cool examples:

Ombre, French for »shaded«

July 25, 2012 in Bath Room, Bed Room, Furniture, Home Decor, Kitchen, Lifestyle, Living Room, Workspace

Ombre trend started two years ago when famous Hollywood actresses started dying their hair in ombre. But this trend has been also transferred in to interior design. It’s a gradual fading technique used on fabrics or even furniture with colors subtly shifting from light to dark.
